The aluminum wheels are machined and have
clear coat from the factory. The clear coat starts to discolor and
peel with age. I found a YouTube video from a DIY guy who restored
his wheels, and I followed his tutorial. The first step was to brush
on some paint stripper, let it sit, and then wipe off/scrape off the
residue. Next, wet sand scratches and stubborn clear coat starting
with 400-grit sandpaper. Then 800, then 1000, then 1500, then 2000.
Finally, apply buffing compound and finish with polish. There are
services that will restore wheels, but I'm on a budget and like to do
things myself. I think the wheels turned out very well, and they're
certainly much better than they were!
